It flows through several different countries. These include Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. The river is very important to the land around it. It helps define where one country ends and another begins.

The river starts in Burundi at Lake Rweru. It is made of two main feeder rivers. These are the Nyabarongo from Rwanda and the Ruvubu from Burundi. The river flows east along the borders of Rwanda and Burundi. Later, it flows north along the border of Rwanda and Tanzania.

It passes over the Rusumo Falls near the town of Rusumo. Finally, it turns east and empties into Lake Victoria in Uganda.

People have traveled this river for a long time. In 1898, Richard Kandt reached the source of the river. In 1894, Gustav Adolf von Götzen crossed the river at the falls. This was during the time when Germany held land in the area. Later, in 1916, Belgians entered Rwanda using this same route. The river has seen many big changes in history. It has played a large role in the stories of Rwanda.

The Kagera is a very large source of water. It brings about 6.4 billion cubic metres of water to Lake Victoria every year. This is about 28 per cent of the water that leaves the lake. The river is also home to many living things. There are at least 55 species of fish in the Rwandan part alone. Some special fish live only in the upper parts of the river. However, one type of fish called Labeobarbus microbarbis is now extinct.

The river can be a difficult place during hard times. In 1994, the river was part of a very sad time in Rwanda. During the genocide, many people were killed near the river banks. The river carried their bodies into Lake Victoria. This caused a health emergency in parts of Uganda. This shows how the river connects all the lands it touches. It moves things from one place to another, even in sad ways.
