It stays entirely inside the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This river is the main source of water for the Congo River. The Lualaba flows north through the country. It ends its journey near the city of Kisangani. At that spot, the name changes to the Congo River. The river is a huge part of the land here. It helps shape the way the country looks.

The river moves through many different types of land. It starts high up on the Katanga plateau. From there, it drops down toward the Manika plateau. This drop creates fast rapids and waterfalls. Near the Nzilo Falls, people built the Nzilo Dam. This dam uses the water to make hydroelectric power. In some areas, the river flows through marshy lakes. These include Lake Upemba and Lake Kisale. The river also flows through a narrow place called the Portes d'Enfer. This area is known as the Gates of Hell.

People have explored this river for a long time. A famous explorer named Henry Morton Stanley traveled down it.

Before his trip, people thought the river might flow to the Nile. Stanley proved that the water actually flows to the Atlantic Ocean. He even called the river the Livingstone at one point. Another explorer named Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza also explored it. These journeys helped people understand how the water moves. They showed how the river connects to the great ocean.

There are many facts to know about the Lualaba. It is very long and has many tributaries. Tributaries are smaller rivers that flow into a larger one. Some big ones are the Luvua and the Lukuga. The Lukuga River drains water from Lake Tanganyika. The river also acts as a border for Upemba National Park. This park protects many living things on the Kibara Plateau. Many towns sit near the water. These include Bukama, Kabalo, Kasongo, and Kongolo. The city of Kindu is also near the river.

The river is a busy place for water travel. Some parts are navigable, which means boats can sail there. For example, boats can travel for 300 kilometres near the Boyoma Falls. These falls are also called Stanley Falls. They are made of seven large cataracts. A cataract is a large, powerful waterfall. After these falls, the river becomes the Congo River. The Lualaba is a vital path for the region. It connects many different places and people together.
