Katanga was a very important place for minerals for a long time. People have mined copper there for over 1,000 years. By the end of the 10th century, they made copper ingots for trade. In the 1890s, the area was between the Belgian Congo and Northern Rhodesia. A king named Msiri ruled the Yeke Kingdom there. Eventually, the Belgian Congo took control of the land.

In 1915, workers found a very special kind of uranium at Shinkolobwe. This uranium was better than any found anywhere else in the world.

The economy of the area relies heavily on the earth's riches. The Democratic Republic of the Congo makes a lot of the world's copper. Most of that copper comes from Katanga. Cobalt is also a huge part of the economy. One company, Katanga Mining Ltd, works to produce much of the world's cobalt. They run a large mine called Tilwezembe. This is an open-pit mine for copper and cobalt.

People in the province also use the Congo Railway to travel.
