Near the city, you can find large open pit mines. These mines are used to find minerals in the ground. The city is also near Lake Nzilo. This lake was made by damming the Lualaba River. It provides water for the mines and power for electricity.

This city is a very important place for mining. People look for metals like copper and cobalt here. They also find uranium, radium, and lime. There is even a rare green mineral named after this place. It is called Kolwezite.

The Musonoi mine is a famous spot nearby. Workers have taken copper from its pits since the 1940s. Because mining is growing so fast, more people are moving to the city. The population is now about 573,000 people.

The history of this area goes back a long time. Long ago, the area was known as Keshila. In the 1730s, agents of the Lunda Empire expanded into this region. Later, in 1938, a company built a small town here. They wanted a headquarters for their mining group. The town grew and became a city in 1971. It had two main parts called Dilala and Manika. In 2015, the rules changed to make Kolwezi the capital of Lualaba.

Kolwezi has many ways to move people and goods. A large highway called the N39 runs through the center. This road connects the city to Lubumbashi and Dilolo. There is also a big train station on the eastern edge of Dilala. Trains carry passengers and heavy metals to Likasi and Lubumbashi.

You can also fly into the Kolwezi Airport. The airport is located just south of the city. These paths help the city stay connected to the rest of the country.

Life in the city has many different parts. The center has banks, restaurants, and many hotels. You can find the Mutoshi Technical Institute on the eastern edge. There are also many schools and hospitals for the people living there. The weather is tropical with warm, rainy summers. The winters are dry and have cool mornings.
