Kolwezi is a vital hub for the global mining industry. It is most famous for its massive deposits of copper and cobalt. These minerals are essential for many modern technologies. The city also contains deposits of uranium, radium, oxide ores, and lime.

The geology of the region is incredibly rich and diverse. One rare green mineral is even named after the city: Kolwezite. This mineral is a copper-cobalt specimen.

Mining activities are central to the local economy and landscape. To the north and west of the city center, you will find large open pit mines. One notable site is the Musonoi mine. This mine uses open-cut pits to extract copper and other metals. Workers have been operating in these pits since the 1940s. The growth of the cobalt industry has caused the city's population to surge to approximately 573,000 people.

Infrastructure supports these heavy industrial activities. For example, Lake Nzilo provides essential resources for the area. This lake was created by damming the Lualaba River. The dam serves two main purposes. It provides a reservoir of water for mining operations. It also generates hydroelectric power for the region. Near the city, there is also a static inverter plant. This plant is part of the HVDC Inga-Shaba system. Such technical facilities are necessary to manage the power needs of a mining center.

The history of the area began long before the modern city existed. The region was once known as Keshila. In the 1730s, agents of the Lunda Empire expanded into this territory. These agents were named Xind and Konokesh. The modern settlement of Kolwezi was established much later, in 1938. It was created as a headquarters for the Union Minière du Haut Katanga. This company cleared the land of acacias and miombo trees to build the town. In 1971, the settlement officially obtained city status. It was divided into two communes named Dilala and Manika. In 2015, administrative changes made Kolwezi the capital of the new Lualaba province.

Kolwezi has experienced significant political and military challenges. In May 1978, a conflict known as the Battle of Kolwezi occurred. Ex-Katangese soldiers, supported by Angola, occupied the city. This led the government of Zaire to request international help. Forces from Belgium, France, Morocco, and the United States were involved. The 2e REP, an elite paratrooper unit of the French Foreign Legion, was sent to rescue hostages. The Belgian army also deployed 750 paratroopers from the Paracommando Regiment. The battle was a heavy event for the region. Records show that 170 Europeans and 6 paratroopers died during the conflict. Additionally, 700 Africans died, which included 250 rebels.

Transportation networks connect Kolwezi to the rest of the continent. The N39 highway, also known as Transafrican Highway 9, runs through the city. This road connects Kolwezi to Lubumbashi and Dilolo. The city also features a major railway station on the eastern edge of the Dilala neighborhood. This station is a key point for the Benguela railway. Every day, trains carry both passengers and heavy mineral loads to Likasi and Lubumbashi. For air travel, the Kolwezi Airport is located just south of the city. This airport serves the city and the surrounding areas.

The city is organized into distinct neighborhoods and functional zones. The Rond Point de L'Indépendance serves as the traditional center. To the west of this traffic circle, the neighborhoods are more formally laid out. Dilala is an upscale neighborhood in the center that houses many foreign workers. The center of the city contains banks, restaurants, and administrative offices. The Mutoshi Technical Institute sits on the eastern edge of the city. There are also many schools and hospitals to serve the population. The climate is a tropical savanna type. This means the city has very warm, rainy summers and warm, dry winters with cool mornings.
