Tshikapa is the capital city of the Kasaï Province. It is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The city sits at a confluence of two major rivers. These are the Tshikapa and Kasai rivers. This location is north of the Angolan border. Specifically, it is 125 km north of the Dundo border crossing. The city is also west of Kananga. It serves as the only town in the province with administrative services.

The city is defined by its unique geography and climate. It has a tropical savanna climate, known as Köppen Aw. This climate is common in western Congo. The weather includes a dry season during June and July. A lengthy wet season lasts from September to May. This season is long but not intense. The city is surrounded by several other towns. Kabodi is to the east. Sami lies to the south. Katshongo is to the west. Mutena is located to the north.

Diamond mining is the primary driver of the local economy. The city was founded in the early 1900s. An American and Belgian mining consortium called Forminière founded it. This group discovered diamonds near this specific location. Today, the diamond industry remains the main form of income. Agriculture is also a major economic activity in Kasaï Province. Most markets in the city lack formal business infrastructure. Many vendors display their products on the ground or in makeshift stalls.

Population changes in Tshikapa have been very dramatic. In 1970, the population was only 38,900. By 1994, it had grown to 180,900. This growth was influenced by the Congo wars. The Kamwina Nsapu rebellion also caused major shifts. These conflicts triggered waves of internal displacement. Many residents had to flee violence or relocate temporarily. The First Congo War also caused the city to grow rapidly. The World Population Review estimates the 2025 population at 1,185,920.

The physical layout of the city reflects its history and needs. Most buildings are one or two stories tall. They are constructed from mudbrick and feature metal roofing. Some structures in the southern core have additional floors. The city is a hub for regional transport. It sits at the meeting of the R706 and N01 highways. The Tshikapa Airport is located on the southern edge of the center. The city also contains 67 primary schools and 36 secondary schools.

Infrastructure provides both services and challenges for the residents. The city has three hospitals and 15 hotels. It also contains six Regional Institutes and one court. There is a town hall and a local office for the central bank. A water treatment plant sits at the junction of the R706 and N01 highways. However, the city is poor and has limited access to electricity and gas. Clean drinking water is also limited. Many of the roads in the city are not paved. The road between Batshamba and Tshikapa was reconstructed from 2012 to 2019.

Transportation relies heavily on the river crossings. In April 2020, the 78-year old N1 Highway Bridge collapsed. It fell into the Kasai River. This event caused significant interruptions to the economy. It also disrupted the regional transportation network. To help with travel, a second bridge was built. This new bridge crosses the Kasai River to the north of the confluence. It was completed in 2014.

Social and recreational life is centered around specific landmarks. The city features two football stadiums. One is called Dibumba Stadium and sits north of the Tshikapa River. The other is Kanzala Stadium, located to the south. These sites are part of the larger urban environment. The city's development is a mix of mining history and modern population pressure. It remains a vital administrative center for the Kasaï Province.
