Katanga was a major province located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

It sat in a significant geographic position within Africa. The province shared borders with Angola to the south. It also formed the entire border between the Congo and Zambia. To the east, it bordered Tanzania via Lake Tanganyika. The landscape included the Katanga Plateau, which is used for ranching and farming. Other areas featured hilly terrain.

The region experienced distinct wet and dry seasons throughout the year.

The province was globally significant due to its vast mineral wealth. The eastern part of the province acted as a rich mining region. It supplied many different materials to the rest of the world. These included copper, cobalt, tin, diamonds, and uranium. Other minerals found there were radium, zinc, cadmium, germanium, manganese, silver, gold, and cobalt.

This wealth made the area a central hub for international trade and industry. The presence of these minerals shaped the history and economy of the entire region.

Copper mining in Katanga has a very long history. It dates back over 1,000 years. By the end of the 10th century CE, mines were producing standard-sized copper ingots. These ingots were used for international transport. In the 1890s, the area faced pressure from two sides. Northern Rhodesia pressed from the south. The Belgian Congo pressed from the north. A leader named Msiri ruled the Yeke Kingdom during this time. He resisted these powers, but Katanga was eventually absorbed into the Belgian Congo.

In the early 1900s, a company called Union Minière du Haut Katanga, or UMHK, controlled much of the mining.

In 1915, a massive discovery occurred at the Shinkolobwe mine. Workers found a deposit of pitchblende and other uranium minerals. This uranium was of a higher grade than anything else found in the world at that time. UMHK kept this discovery a secret for several years. The secrecy ended in 1922 when they announced the production of the first gram of radium.

The Shinkolobwe mine later became a central part of the Manhattan Project.

The political history of the region was often turbulent. After the Congo gained independence from Belgium in 1960, a period of conflict began. Leaders like Moise Tshombe and Godefroid Munongo supported the secession of Katanga. This meant they wanted Katanga to become its own separate state. This move was supported by Belgium but opposed by Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba. This period is known as the Katanga Crisis, which lasted from 1960 to 1965. A breakaway State of Katanga existed from 1960 until 1963 before it was reintegrated.

Today, the economy remains heavily tied to mining operations. The Democratic Republic of the Congo produces more than 3 percent of the world's copper. It also produces half of the world's cobalt. Most of this production comes directly from Katanga.

Lubumbashi serves as the mining capital and a hub for large companies. One major company is Katanga Mining Ltd, which is majority-owned by Glencore DCC. They operate the Tilwezembe mine, which is an open-pit mine for copper and cobalt. This company has the potential to become the world's largest cobalt producer.

In 2015, the administrative structure of the region changed completely. The Katanga Province was officially split into four new provinces. These are Tanganyika, Haut-Lomami, Lualaba, and Haut-Katanga. This change followed a 2005 constitution that specified the split. The old province officially ended its existence on 16 July 2015. Despite these changes, the area remains a vital part of the global mineral supply chain.
