This spot is called a confluence. The city is located north of the border with Angola. It sits west of a place called Kananga. Many nearby towns surround the city area. Kabodi is to the east and Sami is to the south. Katshongo lies to the west while Mutena is to the north.

Diamond mining is a huge part of how the city works. A group called Forminière found diamonds here in the early 1900s. This group was a mix of American and Belgian companies. Because of these diamonds, the city became a center for digging. People also earn money through agriculture. Most markets in town do not have big buildings. Instead, people sell things on the ground or in small stalls. The diamond industry is still the main way people make money.

History has changed the city many times. In 1970, only 38,900 people lived there. By 1994, that number grew to 180,900. Wars in the Congo caused many people to move. Some people had to flee violence or move for a short time. Now, the population is much larger. Experts estimate that about 1,185,920 people live in the city area in 2025. This growth happened because of many different events over the years.

Life in the city has many different parts. Most homes are one or two stories tall. They are built with mudbricks and have metal roofs. Some buildings in the south have extra floors. The city has 67 primary schools and 36 secondary schools. There are also three hospitals and 15 hotels. You can find two football stadiums here. Dibumba Stadium is north of the river. Kanzala Stadium is on the south side.

Traveling to and from Tshikapa can be a hard job. Many of the roads are not paved. In April 2020, an old bridge fell into the Kasai River. This bridge was 78 years old. Its fall made it hard to move goods and people. Luckily, a new bridge was built in 2014.
