The city is built on steep, rocky hills. In the local Kikongo language, the name Matadi means stone. Because of the hills, people have a funny saying about the city. They say you must know how to go up, go down, and sweat.

The city sits on the left bank of the Congo River. It is located just below the last place boats can travel easily. Further up the river, there are rapids that make the water impassable. To help move goods past these rapids, a railway was built. This Matadi–Kinshasa Railway is 366 km long. It was built between the years 1890 and 1898.

This railway helps the city act as a major trading center. It connects the deep interior of the country to the sea port.

History tells us about this area from a long time ago. The site was near the state of Vungu. This place was first mentioned in the year 1535. Later, Sir Henry Morton Stanley founded the city of Matadi in 1879. Upstream, there are caves called the "rock of Diogo Cão." These are named after a Portuguese explorer. He carved graffiti there in 1485 to mark his travels.

Many things move through the port of Matadi today. The port is a main spot for imports and exports. Large amounts of coffee and timber are sent out from here. A fishing company named Pemarza also uses the port. They send fish to the city of Kinshasa.

A big bridge also crosses the river just south of the city. The Matadi Bridge is a suspension bridge that is 722 m long. It is the only bridge over the main part of the Congo River.

The weather in Matadi is a dry tropical savanna type. There is a long dry season from June to September. This happens because of the cold Benguela Current.

The city is divided into three different parts called communes. These three areas are Matadi, Mvuzi, and Nzanza. The city is also home to the Tshimpi Airport. Even though it is a busy place, it stays connected to the coast by a main road. This road goes through the bridge toward Boma, Muanda, and Banana.
