This company built a rail and river link to Katanga. The construction of the Stanleyville-Ponthierville railway lasted from 1903 to 1909. This project used a labor force of up to 4,100 men. The railway helped the city grow into a large urban center. It featured residential buildings and streets lined with trees. During the Belgian Congo period, the city had distinct residential districts. These were separated by schools, military barracks, or green strips.
In the mid-20th century, the city saw major political shifts. Patrice Lumumba, a leader of the Mouvement National Conglais, had strong ties to the city.
In 1964, the Simba Rebellion broke out in the region. Rebels took control of the city in August. They closed the airport and held many foreign nationals captive. This led to a Belgian military response known as Operation Dragon Rouge.
