It is a major part of the Congo River system. The river starts in the middle of Angola. It flows east until it reaches a border. This border sits between Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At this point, the river turns north. It stays as a border for a while before flowing into the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Later, the river turns west again. It flows through the land before joining the Congo River at a place called Kwamouth.

The area around the river is mostly equatorial rainforest. These thick, green forests cover the river basin. The land here is used for farming. However, the soil in this region is often sandy and not very rich. Even with sandy soil, the river is a very important path for people. Many of its smaller rivers are easy to sail on. They do not have big obstacles like waterfalls or thick river weeds. This makes the river a great way to move goods and trade.

Explorers have studied this river for a long time. Henry Morton Stanley reached a part of the river in March 1877. He called the river Nkutu. He said it was a powerful and deep river. He also noticed it came from the Kwango River. In the past, the river was used for very difficult and sad things. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, slave traders used the Kwango River to move through the rainforest. This history had a big impact on the people living there.

One of the most famous things about the Kasai is its diamonds. Many diamonds are found in the river beds. The Kwango River valley is even called the diamond heartland of North Eastern Angola. This is because the diamond beds there are very rich. These stones are important to the whole world. In fact, about 60% of the diamonds in Belgium come from the Kasai River. Those diamonds are sent there to be cut and shaped into jewelry.

The river has many smaller rivers, called tributaries, that flow into it. Some of these are very long. The Kwango River is 1,702 kilometers long. The Sankuru River is 1,280 kilometers long. The Lulua River is 1,184 kilometers long. The Fimi River is 1,120 kilometers long. Each of these rivers helps feed the large Kasai basin. Together, they make the Kasai a huge and busy part of the African landscape.
