Around the world, it is the third largest river by how much water it carries. This is measured by its discharge volume. It follows the Amazon and the Ganges–Brahmaputra rivers in this ranking.

The river is also the deepest one ever recorded. It is a massive part of the African landscape.

The river follows a very unusual and special path. It is the only major river in the world that crosses the equator twice. Most major rivers only cross it once, or not at all.

The water starts in the mountains of the East African Rift. It flows through the Lualaba River and then becomes the Congo. The river makes a large, counter-clockwise arc. It first moves west and then swings southwest. Finally, it flows across the equator again to reach the Atlantic Ocean.

History and names are tied closely to these waters. The name Congo comes from the Kingdom of Kongo. This kingdom was located on the southern bank of the river.

The people there were the Bantu Kongo. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the river was also called the Zaire. This name came from a Portuguese version of a local word. The word meant "river swallowing rivers."

Over time, the name Congo became the most common name in English.

This basin is nearly as large as the European Union. The river flows through the Congo rainforest. This is the second largest rainforest on Earth.

The river is very powerful during the rainy season. At its mouth, it can discharge 41,860 cubic meters of water every second.

It also carries 86 million tonnes of sediment to the ocean each year.

Life near the river depends on its moving water. The river acts like a lifeline for many people. In places with few roads, boats are very important.

The river is also great for making electricity. This is called hydroelectric power. Scientists say the basin holds 13 percent of the world's potential for this power. This could provide energy for all of Sub-Saharan Africa.
