This river is a lifeline for the many people living in the Sahel region.

The river follows a very unusual path. It looks like a giant boomerang. It starts in the Guinea Highlands. The water flows away from the Atlantic Ocean at first. It moves into the dry Sahara Desert. Then, it makes a sharp right turn near the ancient city of Timbuktu. Finally, it flows southeast toward the Gulf of Guinea.

Scientists think the river was once two separate rivers that joined together. This strange shape once confused geographers for two hundred years.

The weather around the river is very hot all year. There is a long dry season from October to May. There is also a short rainy season. The river floods every year. This flooding starts in September and peaks in November.

In 1550, a writer named Leo Africanus used the name Niger. Long before that, people like Pliny the Elder mentioned a river called Nigris. For a long time, Europeans did not know the whole path of the river. They thought different parts of it were separate rivers. It was not until Mungo Park traveled the river in the 1700s that the whole course was correctly identified.
