Chambeshi River

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Chambeshi River is a very special waterway in northeastern Zambia. Many people call it the source of the Congo River. This is because it is the longest headstream for that river. A headstream is the very beginning part of a river. Some people look at water volume to find a source. The Lualaba River carries more water to the Congo. Still, the Chambeshi is famous for its long start.

This river begins in the mountains of northeast Zambia. It starts as a small stream near Lake Tanganyika. The water flows for 480 km through the land. It travels toward the Bangweulu Wetlands. These wetlands are a part of Lake Bangweulu. The river helps keep these wetlands full of water.

The river changes how it moves with the seasons. The rainy season ends in May. At this time, the river delivers a big flood. This flood recharges the Bangweulu Wetlands. It also covers the Zambezian grasslands to the southeast. The water flows out of the wetlands as the Luapula River.

As the river flows, its shape changes quite a bit. Near the town of Kasama, it becomes a maze. It forms many small channels in the wetlands. These channels stay in a floodplain about 25 km wide. The wetlands here are about 2 km wide. Later, the river has one main channel. This channel is about 100 m wide.

You can see the river cross important paths. The Kasama–Mpika road goes over the river. The Tazara Railway also crosses it with a bridge. During a flood, the main channel grows very large. It can reach up to 400 m wide. This river is a key part of the Congo River system. It connects the mountains to the great wetlands.
