Uele River

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Uele River is a large river in Africa. It sits in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This river is very important to the land around it. It is the longest tributary of the Ubangi River. A tributary is a smaller river that flows into a larger one.

This river helps form a much bigger water system. It is a key part of the many rivers in this region.

The river has a very interesting way of forming. It starts at a place called Dungu. At Dungu, two other rivers meet together. These are the Dungu River and the Kibali River. Both of those rivers begin in the mountains near Lake Albert.

Once they meet, they flow west as the Uele River. They travel for a long time before they reach the next big river.

Many smaller rivers join the Uele as it flows. One river that joins from the left side is the Bomokandi River. Another river joins from the right side called the Uere River.

These rivers add more water to the Uele. The Uele flows all the way to a place called Yakoma. At Yakoma, the Uele joins with the Mbomou River. This meeting of rivers is a very special spot.

There are many facts to know about this water path. The Uele and the Mbomou together start the Ubangi River.

The Ubangi River eventually flows into the Congo River. The total length of the Ubangi and Uele is quite large. If you look at the river from a satellite in space, you might see something strange. Parts of the water look red in those photos.

This happens because of iron oxide in the water.

Iron oxide is a mineral that gets into the river. It acts like a color in the water. This makes the river look different from other rivers. It is part of the natural ecoregions of the Congo.

You can see how the river connects to the mountains and the lakes. It shows how water moves through a whole country. The Uele is a great example of how rivers work together.
