This huge lake sits on the Zambezi River. It lies along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The lake is located upstream from where the river meets the Indian Ocean. It is a massive body of water that holds a lot of liquid. This makes it a very important part of the land.

People created this lake by building the Kariba Dam. The dam sits at the northeastern end of the lake. Workers filled the lake between 1958 and 1963. This happened after they finished the dam to flood the Kariba Gorge. The town of Kariba was built for the people working on the dam. Other places like Siavonga and Sinazongwe grew to house people moved by the water.

The lake is much bigger than many other reservoirs. It is four times as large as the Three Gorges Dam. The lake covers a very wide area. It is over 220 kilometers long. The water is also very deep in some spots. The mean depth is about 48 meters. The maximum depth reaches 120 meters.

The weight of all this water even caused over 20 earthquakes. These were earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 5 on the Richter scale.

Many living things call this lake home. When the lake first filled, it had many nutrients from old plants. This helped create a vibrant home for animals. A small fish called kapenta was brought from Lake Tanganyika. Now, many people catch kapenta for a commercial fishery. Large tigerfish eat the kapenta.

On the land, you can see many large animals. Elephants, lions, and cheetahs live in the area. You can also find leopards and buffalo there. The Matusadona National Park is a place for many of these animals. Some islands sit in the water, like Snake Island and Maaze Island.
