Akosombo Dam

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Akosombo Dam is a huge structure in southeastern Ghana. It sits on the Volta River in a place called the Akosombo gorge. This dam is very important because it makes electricity. This kind of power is called hydroelectric power. The main goal was to provide energy for the aluminum industry. The dam helps provide most of the electricity for Togo and Benin too.

To make power, the dam uses moving water. The dam is a high rock-fill embankment. It has a very wide base to stay strong. Inside the power plant, there are six Francis turbines. These are machines that spin to make electricity. Water travels through long pipes called penstocks to reach them. The water creates a hydraulic head, which is the pressure from the height of the water.

People thought about this dam a long time ago. A geologist named Albert Kitson first thought of it in 1915. However, no real plans were made until the 1940s. The American company Valco lent money to Ghana to help build it. An Italian company called Impregilo won the contract in 1961. They finished the dam in 1965, even though the river flooded in 1963. Sadly, 28 workers died while they were building it.

Building the dam changed the land in big ways. It created Lake Volta, which is a massive man-made lake. It is the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area. The lake covers 3.6% of the land in Ghana. It holds 148 cubic kilometers of water. This makes it the third-largest man-made lake by volume. The lake's water level can change based on the rain.

These changes also affected the people and nature. About 80,000 people had to move to new villages. This was hard because they lost their farms and homes. The new soil near the lake is not as good for growing food. Sometimes, weeds grow too fast in the water. These weeds make it hard for boats to travel. These plants also give homes to insects that spread illnesses like malaria.
