It sits on the Volta River. This dam makes power from moving water. We call this hydroelectric power. The dam was built to help make aluminum.

Building the dam changed the land. It flooded a large area to make Lake Volta. This is the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area.

The lake covers 3.6% of Ghana. Many people had to move to new homes because of the lake. About 80,000 people left their villages.

The lake also changed the nature around it. Some plants grew too fast in the water. These weeds make it hard for boats to move. These plants also give homes to bugs. These bugs can spread sickness to people. The soil near the lake is not as good for farming as it used to be. This makes life harder for many families. The dam still provides power to Ghana, Togo, and Benin.
