It sits in southern Egypt and northern Sudan. This lake was created by the Aswan High Dam. It is one of the largest lakes made by people in the world. The lake is very long. At its widest point, it sits near the Tropic of Cancer. Most of the lake is in Egypt. This part makes up 83% of the total water. People in Sudan call their part Lake Nubia.

Building the dam was a huge project. It began in 1960. The leader of Egypt at that time was Gamal Abdel Nasser. He wanted a way to control the Nile River. The dam was finished in 1970. Later, President Anwar Sadat opened the dam and the lake in 1971. The dam was built to replace an older dam from 1902. It was made to provide steady water. It also helps make electricity for the country.

Creating the lake changed the land forever. Many Nubian people lived in the area before. They had to leave their homes and move elsewhere. Their old villages were flooded by the rising water. Many ancient ruins were also in danger of being lost. An international group called UNESCO led a plan to save them. They moved famous sites like the Abu Simbel temples. Other sites, like the temples of Kalabsha, were also saved. However, some places like the Buhen fortress stayed underwater.

Today, the lake is very important for the economy. It helps Egypt grow much more food. The lake provides a steady water supply for farms. This has increased farm land by about 30%. The lake is also full of life. There are 52 different species of fish there. People catch a lot of tilapia and Nile perch. Thousands of boats sail the water for fishing. Many tourists also visit for cruises and to see the old temples.

The dam also makes a lot of power. It produces about 2.1 gigawatts of electricity. This provides a large part of Egypt's needs. But there are new things to watch for. A new dam called the GERD is being built in Ethiopia. This dam is upstream from Lake Nasser. It could change how much water flows into the lake. This might make it harder for Egypt and Sudan to use the water. Both nations rely on the Nile for their lives.
