This river creates a thin, green valley. This valley is surrounded by a very dry desert. Most of the land is made of sandstone hills.

The weather in Aswan is very hot and dry. It is a desert climate with almost no rain. You will see plenty of sunshine throughout the year. During the summer, temperatures often reach 40°C. The winter months are much milder and more pleasant. In the spring, sandstorms called khamsin can blow through. These storms can make it hard to see clearly. They also make the temperature go up for a short time.

People have lived in this region for thousands of years. In ancient times, the area was called Swenett. This name came from an old symbol for trade. The Nile had a place called the First Cataract here. This made the area a great spot for trade caravans. Aswan was also where workers found granite for monuments. You can still see an unfinished obelisk in a quarry. There were also important temples like the Temple of Philae.

Many people lived on Elephantine Island long ago.

Big building projects changed the land in the 1900s. Workers first finished the Aswan Low Dam in 1902. Later, they built the Aswan High Dam. This dam was finished in 1970. The dam created a huge lake called Lake Nasser. This lake is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. Because of the water, some old monuments had to move. UNESCO helped move sites like Abu Simbel to safer ground. This project also meant moving the local Nubian people.

Today, about 1,685,743 people live in this governorate. Many of them live in villages along the Nile. Aswan is a very important place for the Nubian community. They speak Arabic as well as Nubian languages. These languages include Nobiin and Kenzi. The area is divided into many smaller parts for local government. Some of these places include Edfu and Kom Ombo. The eastern bank of the river is more crowded with people. The western bank is mostly empty desert land.
