geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Congo River is a massive geographical feature in Africa. It is the second-longest river on the continent, following only the Nile.

Globally, it ranks as the third largest river by discharge volume. Discharge volume is the amount of water a river flows into the sea. The Amazon and the Ganges–Brahmaputra rivers are larger in this regard.

The river is also the deepest recorded river in the world. Its depths can exceed 220 meters.

The river system is very complex and long. It begins with the Congo–Lualaba–Luvua–Luapula–Chambeshi River system. This entire system is the ninth-longest river in the world. The Chambeshi River in Zambia is considered the source. This follows the common practice of using the longest tributary as a source. The water flows into the Lualaba River. The Lualaba is the name of the river upstream of Boyoma Falls.

After passing the falls, the river is known as the Congo. Measured with the Lualaba, the main river reaches a total length of 4,700 kilometers.

The Congo follows a unique path through the landscape. It is the only major river in the world to cross the equator twice. Most major rivers cross the equator only once or not at all. The river starts in the East African Rift highlands. It flows northwest from Kisangani. Then, it describes a large counter-clockwise arc. It moves west and then swings southwest. Finally, it flows back across the equator to reach the Atlantic Ocean.

History and names are deeply linked to the river. The name Congo comes from the Kingdom of Kongo. This kingdom was located on the southern bank of the river. The kingdom was named after the Bantu Kongo people. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the river was also called the Zaire. This name is a Portuguese version of a Kikongo word. It means "river swallowing rivers."

The name Congo became the preferred English name during the 19th century. Today, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo bear its name.

The Congo Basin is a vast environmental region. It covers about 3,700,000 square kilometers. This area is about 13% of the entire African landmass. The basin is nearly as large as the European Union.

The river flows through the Congo rainforest. This is the second largest rainforest area in the world.

Because the basin sits on both sides of the equator, the water flow is stable. This is because one part of the river is always in a rainy season.

The river provides vital resources and connections. It is a lifeline for people in a land with few roads. The town of Mbandaka is a busy port on its banks.

Large river steamers have been used to move goods. These goods include copper, palm oil, sugar, coffee, and cotton. However, the river is not always easy to navigate. The Livingstone Falls consist of many rapids and cataracts. These falls prevent boats from traveling easily from the sea to the upper river.

Finally, the Congo River has massive energy potential. It is the most powerful river in Africa. During the rainy season, much water flows into the Atlantic. The discharge at the mouth averages 41,860 cubic meters per second.

Scientists say the Congo Basin holds 13 percent of global hydropower potential. Hydropower is electricity made from moving water. This amount of energy could provide enough power for all of Sub-Saharan Africa.
