Dissolved load

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Rivers carry many different things as they flow. Some bits are big rocks on the bottom. Other bits are tiny particles floating in the water. But there is a third type called dissolved load. This is the part of a river's load carried in solution. It is made of tiny bits called ions. These ions come from chemical weathering of rocks. This load helps move material away from the land. It is a major part of how landscapes change over time.

How does this dissolved load work? It all starts with the weather and the climate. Rain and heat cause chemical weathering to happen. This process breaks down the rocks into tiny ions. The water then carries these ions along the river path. This is how material moves out of a drainage basin. This movement is called salt export when it goes to the sea. If this does not happen, the soil can become salty.

Scientists use special ways to measure this load. First, they take a water sample from the river. They measure the pH and the conductivity of the water. They also check the bicarbonate alkalinity. Next, they filter the water to remove floating bits. They might add chloroform to stop tiny life from growing. They also add hydrochloric acid to the sample. This keeps the dissolved ions from settling out of the water.

After that, they run many different chemical tests. They use flame photometry to find sodium and potassium ions. They use atomic absorption spectrophotometry for calcium and magnesium. These tests help them find the concentration of each solute. This data helps geologists study the Earth. They can use it to study denudation. Denudation is when the top layers of land wear away. By measuring sediment, they can see how the land changes.

This science even helps us understand the ancient past. The dissolved load can help reconstruct old climates. This happens because chemical weathering is a major part of the load. It is linked to the carbonate-silicate cycle. This cycle helps turn carbon dioxide into carbonate rocks. This process acts as a sink for gas in the air. It helps control the greenhouse effect on Earth. This helps decide the temperature of our planet.
