Dissolved load

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Rivers transport various materials as they flow through the landscape. This collection of moving material is known as a stream load. There are three main types of stream load. One type is the bed load, which moves along the bottom. Another type is the suspended load, which consists of particles floating in the water. The third type is the dissolved load. This is the portion of the total sediment load carried in solution. It consists mostly of ions that come from chemical weathering.

The dissolved load is a major part of how material leaves a drainage basin. A drainage basin is the area of land where water collects and flows into a river. While the dissolved load is usually smaller than the suspended load, this can change. For example, the load might change if humans use much of the river flow for industry or irrigation. The composition of this load is very important. It regulates the chemistry and the biology of the stream water. It also represents a significant part of the total material flux out of a landscape.

Chemical weathering is the primary process that controls the dissolved load. This process depends heavily on climate and weather conditions. Factors like temperature and moisture play a key role. When rain and heat interact with rocks, they break them down into ions. These ions then enter the water. The amount of dissolved load can change based on the shape of the land. On steeper surfaces, the dissolved load's contribution to the total stream load decreases. This happens because rain is less likely to soak into the rocks on steep slopes. Less soaking means less chemical weathering occurs.

Scientists use several steps to measure the dissolved load in a river. First, they take water samples and test them for specific properties. They measure the pH, which is the acidity, and the conductivity. They also check the bicarbonate alkalinity of the sample. Next, they must filter the samples to remove any suspended sediments. They may add chloroform to prevent the growth of microorganisms. They also add hydrochloric acid to the samples. This acid prevents the dissolved ions from precipitating, or settling out, of the solution.

After the samples are prepared, scientists use advanced chemical tests. They want to find the concentration of each solute, which is the substance dissolved in the water. For instance, they use flame photometry to find the concentration of sodium and potassium ions. To find calcium and magnesium ions, they use atomic absorption spectrophotometry. These precise measurements allow geologists to study many different Earth processes. They can use this data to understand erosion and the movement of material across the planet.

One major application is studying denudation. Denudation is the process of wearing away the top layers of the Earth's landscape. It is often too slow to measure directly. However, scientists can find the rate indirectly by measuring the sediment load of draining streams. Any material passing a specific point must have come from the drainage basin upstream. The dissolved load also helps scientists reconstruct ancient climates. Because chemical weathering creates the dissolved load, it tracks how the Earth's climate has changed over time.

The dissolved load is even linked to the temperature of the planet. This happens through the carbonate-silicate cycle. In this cycle, the chemical weathering of silicate rocks acts as a primary sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide. This means the process removes carbon dioxide from the air and turns it into carbonate rocks. Since carbon dioxide concentrations control the greenhouse effect, this cycle helps determine Earth's temperature. This connection shows how tiny ions in a river can influence the entire global climate.

Finally, the movement of these ions is part of a process called salt export. This is when water carries salts from a river basin to a lake or the sea. This process is vital for the health of the soil. If there is not enough salt export, the river basin can change. The land may gradually convert into alkali soils or saline soils, especially in the lower reaches of the river.
