Mbuji-Mayi

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Mbuji-Mayi is a large city in the south-central part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It sits in the Luba country and lies along the Mbuji-Mayi River. The city's name comes from the local Tshiluba language and means "Goat-Water." This name was chosen because there are so many goats in the region. Although the city is very big, it feels quite remote. It does not have many easy paths to other provinces or large cities like Kinshasa.

This city is one of the most important places in the world for diamonds. It is built right on top of one of the largest diamond deposits on Earth. In the 1950s, experts thought the area held at least 300 million karats of diamonds. These are industrial diamonds used for many different jobs. Some diamonds come from large mines run by a company called MIBA. Other people find them by looking in the local streams and waterways.

Long ago, the area was just a small group of villages. The Bakwanga clan owned the land where the city now stands. People first found diamonds there in 1907, but they did not know their full value until 1913. Back then, the city was called Bakwanga. It was a small mining camp built for workers and company officials. By the late 1950s, the population was only about 39,830 people.

After the country gained independence in 1960, the city began to grow very fast. A Luba leader named Albert Kalonji even named it the capital of a new state. He was called an emperor during a big celebration with singing and dancing. Later, the city was renamed Mbuji-Mayi to help bring different groups together. Today, the city is organized into five parts called communes. These are Bipemba, Dibindi, Diulu, Kanshi, and Muya.

Life in Mbuji-Mayi can be difficult because of its location and history. For many years, the city struggled with broken roads and very little electricity. In the 1990s, the mining company MIBA helped by providing water and power. However, many people still face hard jobs like finding clean drinking water. In 2020, the government started a large project to fix the water pipes and towers. Most of the city's business still happens around a place called Avenue Inga.
