A man named Sir Robert Williams planned the path. He wanted to link copper mines in the Congo to the coast. The train line runs from the port of Lobito to the Katanga province. Huambo became a main hub for these trains. It even had the most important railway workshop in Africa. The railway helped the city grow into a strong economic center.

Long ago, the area had different names and rulers. The name Huambo comes from Wambu. This was one of 14 old kingdoms of the Ovimbundu people. These people arrived from Eastern Africa a long time ago. In 1912, the Portuguese officially founded the city. In 1928, they gave it a new name, Nova Lisboa. This name means "New Lisbon" after the capital of Portugal. After Angola became independent in 1975, the city took its original name back.

Huambo is known for many different things. It has many schools and places for learning.

Life in Huambo has not always been easy. A long civil war lasted from 1975 until 2002. This war caused a lot of damage to the city.

Many people had to leave their homes to find safety. There were very hard battles in the streets. Even so, the city remains a very important center.
