M'banza Kongo is a very special city in Angola. It sits in the Zaire Province near the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The city is built on top of a large, flat mountain. This mountain is sometimes called Mongo a Kaila. Some legends say this name means the mountain of division. A river called the Luezi flows in the valley to the south.

The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it is a place of great importance to the whole world.

The city has a tropical savanna climate. It has a wet season from October to May. This season is not too intense. There is also a dry season from June to September. During this time, it almost never rains. A cold ocean current called the Benguela Current helps cause this dry weather. The city's history is tied to the Kingdom of Kongo. A leader named Lukeni founded the city at a junction of trade routes. The kingdom once reached from the Atlantic coast to the Nkisi River.

Many years ago, M'banza Kongo was a very large town. It may have been the largest town in sub-equatorial Africa. In the 1620s, about 130,000 people lived in the area. About 30,000 to 45,000 people lived in the city on the mountain. The city had many important buildings. There were twelve churches and a two-story royal palace. The palace was the only building like it in all of Kongo. Portuguese traders and missionaries arrived there in the 1550s.

The city has seen many changes over time. It was once called São Salvador by the Portuguese. This name was used from 1570 until 1976. The city was even abandoned for a time during civil wars. It was later restored as the capital by King Pedro IV in 1709. Today, the city has a population of 221,141 people. It changed its name back to M'banza Kongo after Angola became independent. This name means the City of Kongo.

Visitors can find many amazing sites in the city today. They can see the ruins of a 16th-century cathedral. Some people say it is the oldest church in sub-Saharan Africa. There is also a royal palace that is now a museum. The museum holds many objects from the old kingdom. You can also find the Manikongo's judgement tree in the downtown area. Another site is the sunguilu, where the king's body was washed. These places help us learn about the past.
