Angola also has a special part called Cabinda. This province is separate from the main land. It sits between the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The capital city is Luanda, which is also the most crowded place in the country.

The land of Angola has a very long history. People have lived there since the Palaeolithic Age.

Long ago, the Khoi and San peoples lived there as hunter-gatherers. Later, Bantu-speaking people moved into the region. They brought new ways of living, like growing bananas and taro. They also kept large herds of cattle. These groups helped form different states and kingdoms. By the 13th century, these groups were organized into large confederations. The Kingdom of Kongo became a very strong power in the area.

This period was very difficult for the local people. There were many wars between the Portuguese and local kingdoms like Ndongo. The slave trade also changed how the economy worked. This caused much conflict and struggle for the people living there. The borders of the country did not look like they do today until the early 20th century.

Angola finally became an independent republic in 1975.

However, independence brought a very hard time. A long civil war started that same year. Different groups fought for control of the country. Some groups were backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba. Other groups were supported by the United States and South Africa.
