To the north lies Liambo, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo is to the east. The area has a tropical savanna climate, which means it stays warm.

The city works as a very important port for Angola. This is because there are large oil reserves located in the sea nearby. Many ships visit the docks to help move these resources. Local people also work in fishing and gathering shellfish from the water. Some people also work in timber extraction or small farming. The city is a major hub for trade and administrative services. This activity helps the local economy stay active and growing.

Cabinda has a long and changing history. Around the year 1490, it was just a small place for hunters and fishermen. By 1530, it became a key sea outlet for the Kingdom of Cacongo. Later, the Portuguese arrived and set up a trading post in 1620. In 1783, they even built a fort called Santa Maria de Cabinda. The city officially became a city on 28 May 1956. It has since grown from a small settlement into a major urban center.

Many different groups of people live in the municipality today. The population was 624,646 according to the 2014 Census. Most residents belong to the Kongo ethnic group, specifically the Ibinda subgroup. These people are often called Cabindas or Fiotes. You might also meet people from the Ambundu, Ovimbundu, or Chokwe groups. Many people moved here for jobs in the oil industry. This makes the city feel very diverse and cosmopolitan.

Language and culture are very important in Cabinda. Portuguese is the official language used in government and schools.

However, many people primarily speak Ibinda, which is a Bantu language. The city is also known for hosting big sporting events. For example, it hosted the African Men's Basketball Championship in 1999. It also held the Africa Cup of Nations in 2010. These events show how the city connects with the rest of the continent.
