The most important physical feature is the Cabinda Bay. This bay covers almost the entire coastal strip of the city. To the north, the municipality borders Liambo. To the east, it meets the Democratic Republic of the Congo. To the south, it borders Angoio. The area has a tropical savanna climate. This means the weather is generally warm and seasonal.

The city serves as a vital economic hub for Angola. It is one of the nation's main oil ports. This importance comes from the large offshore oil reserves nearby. The municipality covers an area of 1,823 km². It is the most populous municipality in the province. It is also the eighth most populous in Angola. Many residents work in the primary sector. This includes fishing in the sea and rivers. Others gather shellfish or practice subsistence peasant farming. Timber extraction is also a key part of the local economy.

Cabinda has a long and complex history. It emerged around the year 1490. At that time, it was a small settlement of hunters and fishermen. By 1530, it became a maritime outlet for the Kingdom of Cacongo. The Portuguese established a trading post there in 1620. They traded goods like salt, timber, and lubongo cloth. In 1783, the Portuguese built the Fort of Santa Maria de Cabinda. This fortification helped create a center for political and military leaders. The city was officially elevated to city status on 28 May 1956.

The name "Cabinda" has a specific origin. Historian Joaquim Martins suggests it comes from two words. The first part comes from "Mafuca." This was a title for a high-ranking trade official in local kingdoms. The second part comes from "Binda," the name of a specific official. Binda was responsible for trade between native kingdoms and the Portuguese. In the 19th century, the city had other names. It was called Porto Rico, Vila Amélia, and Palmar. Another name, Chioua, comes from a legend. It refers to a mermaid said to live in the area.

The population of the municipality is 699,053 people. Most residents belong to the Kongo ethnic group. Specifically, many are part of the Ibinda subgroup. These people are often called Cabindas or Fiotes. The city is very diverse and cosmopolitan. People from the Ambundu, Ovimbundu, and Chokwe groups live there too. Many arrived because of the oil industry. There are also Chinese communities and migrants from the Congo region. This mix of people creates a unique social landscape.

Language plays a significant role in daily life. Portuguese is the official language of Angola. It is used in administration and official settings.

However, Ibinda is the primary language spoken by many. Ibinda is a Bantu language. The city also hosts major international sporting events. In 1999, it hosted the African Men's Basketball Championship. In 2010, it hosted the Africa Cup of Nations. The Estádio Nacional do Chiazi is the city's largest sports facility.

Political changes have shaped the city's modern era. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the city saw intense fighting. This occurred during the transition to Angolan independence. The city became a fortified military base during the Cabinda conflict. In 1990, a grenade attack at a market injured 24 people. This was claimed by the FLEC group. Recent administrative reforms in 2024 changed the territory. Part of the municipality was separated to create new municipalities. These new areas are Angoio, Liambo, and Tando Zinze.
