It is also the largest Lusophone city outside of Brazil. In 2024, the population reached over 8.8 million people. This number represents about one third of Angola's total population.

The city has a long and complex history. A Portuguese explorer named Paulo Dias de Novais founded it in January 1576.

For many years, the city was a center for the slave trade to Brazil. This trade involved local merchants and warriors who profited from it. The trade continued until it was prohibited in 1836. During the 17th century, the Imbangala were rivals to the Mbundu in supplying slaves to the market. By 1751, between 5,000 and 10,000 slaves were sold annually.

Luanda experienced a major economic shift in the 19th century. After the slave trade ended, Angola's ports opened to foreign shipping in 1844.

By 1850, Luanda was a highly developed city in the Portuguese Empire. It became a hub for exporting many different products. These included palm oil, peanut oil, wax, and timber. Other exports were ivory, cotton, coffee, and cocoa. Local producers also provided maize, tobacco, dried meat, and cassava flour. In 1889, Governor Brito Capelo opened an aqueduct to supply the city with water. This helped the city grow significantly.

The 20th century brought rapid changes and challenges. During the period of the Estado Novo dictatorship, the city grew quickly. In 1940, the population was 61,208 people. By 1970, it had grown to 475,328 people.

When the Angolan Civil War began in 1975, many white Portuguese residents left as refugees. However, the city's population grew due to internal refugees fleeing the war. The existing infrastructure could not handle this sudden increase. This led to the expansion of slums called musseques. These areas grew many kilometers beyond the original city limits.

In the 21st century, Luanda has entered a period of major reconstruction.

This renewal is supported by wealth from oil and diamond industries. Many new large-scale developments are changing the cityscape. Some luxury housing projects have replaced old slums in Luanda Bay.

The city is also working to fix obsolete roads and electricity systems. New highways are being planned to connect different parts of the region. A large Chinese firm has been contracted to build much of the new replacement housing.

Luanda is a massive economic and industrial hub today. It is a major center for the oil industry and contains a refinery.

Many different types of manufacturing happen within the city. These include textile production and beverage production. Other industries include cement, plastics, and metallurgy. The city also has plants for making shoes and assembling new cars. Because of these high costs, Luanda is ranked as one of the most expensive cities for expatriates. It is also a center for education, housing the University of Agostinho Neto.

The geography and climate of Luanda are quite distinct. The city has a hot semi-desert climate.

This is influenced by the cool Benguela Current offshore. This current keeps the humidity surprisingly low for a tropical latitude. This makes the hot months more bearable than in other parts of Africa. Frequent fog also helps keep temperatures steady at night. The city is divided into the Baixa de Luanda and the Cidade Alta. The Baixa is the lower, old city near the port. It features narrow streets and colonial buildings.
