It sits on the Atlantic coast at Cape Mesurado in Montserrado County. The city is located on a peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mesurado River. This river mouth forms a large natural harbor. The city serves as the political, administrative, economic, and cultural center of the nation. It is the most densely populated region in Liberia. According to the 2022 census, the city has about 1.76 million residents. The greater metropolitan area contains more than 2.2 million people. This accounts for roughly one-third of the total population of Liberia.

The geography of the area is defined by its water and landforms. The Saint Paul River lies north of the city. It forms the northern boundary of Bushrod Island. Residents reach this island by crossing the "New Bridge" from downtown.

The climate is classified as a tropical monsoon climate. This means the city experiences a wet season and a dry season. However, it receives rain even during the dry months. In fact, Monrovia is the wetest capital city in the world. Temperatures remain fairly constant throughout the year. High temperatures average near 30 degrees Celsius in the summer and 27 degrees Celsius in the winter. Low temperatures usually stay around 24 degrees Celsius.

Monrovia has a complex history of settlement and change. Before 1816, the area around Cape Mesurado was known as Ducor. It was a crossroads for trade for many ethnic groups. These included the Dey, Kru, Bassa, Gola, and Vai communities. In 1821, the American Colonization Society arrived in West Africa. They wanted to create a colony for free African Americans from the United States.

On January 7, 1822, settlers moved to Dazoe Island, now called Providence Island. They later moved to the mainland and established a settlement named Christopolis. In 1824, the city was renamed Monrovia. It was named after James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States. Monroe supported the mission to relocate African Americans to Africa.

The city has grown through various stages of political development. In 1845, a constitutional convention was held in Monrovia. This convention drafted a document that became the constitution for the Republic of Liberia in 1847. During the early 20th century, the city was divided into two sectors. One sector was Monrovia proper, where Americo-Liberians lived. The other sector was Krutown, inhabited mainly by ethnic Krus and Bassas. By 1926, people from the interior began migrating to the city for work. By 1937, the population had grown to 10,000 people.

Monrovia has experienced significant hardship due to conflict. The country faced two civil wars between 1989 and 2003. These wars caused extensive damage to the city's infrastructure and public services. Major battles took place during the siege of Monrovia. During these conflicts, many young people were forced into fighting and lost their homes.

In 2002, a group called the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace helped end the war. These women gathered in a fish market to pray and sing. This movement led to the election of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. She became the first female president in an African nation. In 2014, the city also dealt with the West Africa Ebola outbreak.

The city is organized into several distinct districts and neighborhoods.

South of the center is Capitol Hill, where the national government is located. Sinkor is a bustling midtown section with many hotels and businesses. It also contains the Spriggs Payne secondary airport. The Airfield area near the airport is a major center for nightlife. Other large areas include Congo Town and the suburb of Paynesville.

Economic life in Monrovia is tied to its location and its government. The Freeport of Monrovia is the principal seaport for the country. This harbor was expanded by U.S. forces during the Second World War. The economy includes port operations, manufacturing, and services. The city also has a large informal sector.
