The city's economy depends heavily on its harbor. This harbor is located in the estuary of the Sierra Leone River. It is one of the largest natural deep water harbors in the world. This means large ships can easily enter the water. The harbor connects Sierra Leone to global trade routes.

Freetown's history began long before its formal founding. The Bullom people lived in the area for millennia. Later, the Mane people invaded and established chiefdoms. In the 1560s, the Mane king Flansire worked with John Hawkins. They destroyed the town of Bonga, which held 10,000 people. This area would eventually become part of Freetown.

The land has always been a site of movement.

Formal settlement began with the Province of Freedom in 1787. This group included 400 formerly enslaved people from London. They purchased land from the Koya Temne leaders. However, disputes led King Jimmy to burn the settlement in 1789. Later, in 1792, a larger group arrived. This group included 1,196 African Americans led by Lieutenant John Clarkson. They arrived on 15 ships between February and March.

They cleared the jungle to build a new home.

The settlers built the city using an American grid pattern. This means they used parallel streets and wide roads. Water Street was one of the largest roads. They gathered at a large cotton tree to begin their community. At this tree, Reverend David George preached the first Baptist service in Africa. These settlers and their descendants are known as the Creole people. Their traditional housing used stone foundations and wooden superstructures.

Freetown became a British Crown Colony in 1808. From 1808 to 1874, it was the capital of British West Africa. The Royal Navy used the city to stop the slave trade. They brought liberated slaves to Freetown, which changed the population. This made the city very diverse. Today, no single ethnic group makes up more than 27% of the population. Most people communicate using the Krio language.

The city has faced many difficult challenges over the years. It saw fierce fighting during the Sierra Leone Civil War in the 1990s. In 2017, a massive mudslide occurred near Mount Sugar Loaf. This disaster happened after heavy rain and killed over 300 people. In 2021, a fuel tanker explosion also caused many deaths.

Despite these hardships, the city remains a vital center of life.

Today, Freetown is governed by a City Council and a mayor. The mayor is directly elected every four years. Yvonne Aki Sawyerr has served as mayor since 2018. She was re-elected in 2022. The city is a place of constant activity and movement. You can see this in the busy markets and the National Stadium.
