Bissau is the capital and largest city of the nation of Guinea-Bissau.

It serves as the country's primary administrative, military, and industrial center. The city also acts as a major port for the region. This importance stems from its location on the Geba River estuary. This estuary sits just off the Atlantic Ocean. Because the river is deep enough for ocean-going vessels, Bissau is a vital hub for trade.

The city is a central point for the nation's economy and education.

The geography of Bissau is defined by its low-lying landscape. The land surrounding the city sits very close to sea level. This area experiences a tropical savanna climate, known scientifically as Köppen Aw. This climate type is characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons. From November to May, the city receives almost no rain. However, the remaining five months of the year bring significant rainfall. This seasonal cycle shapes the local environment and the lives of the people.

Bissau has a complex history rooted in the traditions of the Papel people. Long before Europeans arrived, the area was a kingdom. Oral traditions suggest that a man named Mecau founded this kingdom. He moved to the region with his sister, his six wives, and his subjects. The kingdom was highly stratified and consisted of seven distinct clans. The Bossassun clan, which descended from Mecau's sister, inherited the throne. This clan may be the source of the name "Bissau."

European influence began to change the region in the 16th century. Portuguese traders arrived and worked with local monarchs. In 1687, the city of Bissau was officially founded as a Portuguese trading post. Over the next century, the Portuguese and the Papel people often clashed. The Portuguese tried to enforce a trade monopoly, but the Papel people practiced free trade. These tensions led to the abandonment and rebuilding of various forts. Eventually, after decades of resistance, the Portuguese defeated the Kingdom of Bissau in 1915. This event incorporated the territory into Portuguese Guinea.

The 20th century brought many more shifts to the city. In 1941, the capital of the territory was moved to Bissau. The city became a center for political struggle during the colonial era. A dockworkers' strike in 1959 led to bloody repression. This event pushed nationalists toward armed resistance. After the independence struggle led by the PAIGC, Bissau became the capital of the newly independent state. However, the city faced great hardship during the Guinea-Bissau Civil War from 1998 to 1999. Intense fighting destroyed much of the infrastructure, including the Presidential Palace.

Despite these challenges, Bissau has shown great resilience. The population has grown significantly over the years. In the 1979 census, the population was 109,214 people. By the 2015 census, that number had risen to 492,004. This means Bissau holds more than 25% of the country's total population. Since the civil war, the city has rebounded with new and rehabilitated buildings. It remains a busy center for fishing and agriculture. The city trades goods such as peanuts, hardwoods, copra, palm oil, and rubber.

Today, Bissau is a diverse and active urban center. Religion plays a major role in daily life, with 50% of the population being Muslim. Christianity accounts for 34%, while 7.9% follow animist traditions. This diversity is visible in the many mosques and churches throughout the city.

Football is the most popular sport, with many local teams based in the city. Travelers reach the city via Osvaldo Vieira International Airport. This is the only international airport in Guinea-Bissau. The city is also connected to the rest of the continent by the Trans–West African Coastal Highway. Bissau continues to grow as a vital link for its nation.
