Saint-Louis is a significant city located in northwest Senegal.

It sits on a narrow island within the Senegal River. This island is slightly longer than it is wide. To the west, a large sand spit called the Langue de Barbarie separates the river from the Atlantic Ocean.

The city is part of the Sahel region. This is a transitional zone between the Sahara Desert dunes and the savanna. The landscape features acacia trees and sandy soil. During the dry season, sand storms often move through the area. The rainy season brings heat, humidity, and storms. These storms create marshes and flood basins that attract many birds.

The geography of Saint-Louis is defined by three distinct features. These are the Sahel, the marshes, and the Langue de Barbarie. The Langue de Barbarie is a wide strip of land. It separates the lower Senegal River from the Atlantic Ocean. This area contains seaside neighborhoods like Ndar Toute and Guet Ndar. The vegetation here includes Filao trees. These trees are planted to prevent soil erosion in salty, sandy soil. On the mainland, the east bank of the river holds Sor. This is an older settlement that is now a suburb. It is almost entirely surrounded by tidal marshes.

Nature provides many important sites near the city. The National Park of the Langue de Barbarie covers 20 square kilometers. It sits at the southern point of the sand spit. This park includes the estuary of the Senegal River. It hosts thousands of water birds, such as pelicans and pink flamingos. About 60 kilometers north of the city is the Djoudj Bird Park. It is the third largest ornithological park in the world. This park covers over 120 square kilometers. Each year, 3 million migrating birds from 400 species visit its lakes.

Another site is the Gueumbeul Fauna Reserve. It covers 7 square kilometers and protects animals like the dama gazelle and the Patas monkey.

The history of Saint-Louis began long before French arrival. The local Wolof people called the island Ndar. A Wolof settlement existed at Guet Ndar around 1450. It served as a place for Muslim pilgrims traveling to Mecca. The French first built a fort on Bocos Island in 1638. They moved the fort to the island of Ndar in 1659 due to flooding. The name Saint-Louis honors King Louis IX of France. It also honors King Louis XIV, who was reigning in 1659.

Between 1673 and 1902, it was the capital of the French colony of Senegal. It also served as the capital of French West Africa from 1895 to 1902. Later, it was the capital of Mauritania from 1920 to 1957.

During the colonial era, a unique culture developed. A group known as the Métis, or Franco-African Creoles, became very influential. They were known for their elegance and refined social lives. These people controlled much of the river trade. They also helped finance Catholic institutions. The city's economy changed over many years. Early trade included gold, hides, and beeswax. Later, the trade of gum arabic became the main economic engine.

In the 19th century, Governor Louis Faidherbe modernized the city. He built bridges and provided fresh drinking water. He also built a telegraph line to Dakar. Despite these developments, the city's importance declined as Dakar grew. The completion of the Dakar-Saint Louis railroad in 1885 changed how trade moved.

Today, Saint-Louis is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This status helps support the local tourism industry. The city also hosts the Saint Louis Jazz Festival. However, the city faces serious environmental challenges. It has a hot desert climate with two seasons. The rainy season lasts from June to October. The dry season lasts from November to May. Rising sea levels threaten the city center. A government study suggests 80% of the city could face flooding by 2080.

A failed canal project in 2003 also made flooding worse.

Economic issues also affect the local community. The fishing industry is currently struggling. Between 2016 and 2017, the amount of fish caught declined sharply. This is a major problem because 75% of animal protein in Senegal comes from fish. Local fishermen must spend twice as much time to catch smaller amounts. They are also competing with foreign fishing vessels. These changes create ripple effects throughout the local economy. Despite these difficulties, Saint-Louis remains a vital cultural and historical center in Senegal.
