The city is part of the Sahel, which is a dry area between the Sahara Desert and the savanna. This landscape has sandy soil and occasional acacia trees. During the dry season, sand storms can blow through the area. The rainy season brings heat, humidity, and storms that fill the nearby marshes with water.

Life in Saint-Louis faces some modern challenges. The city is very low and sits near the water. Because of climate change, the sea level is rising. A government study says that up to 80% of the city could face flooding by 2080.

Fishing is also a hard job for people living there now. Overfishing and foreign boats mean fishermen catch smaller amounts of fish. This is a big deal because many people in Senegal rely on fish for food. Despite these problems, the city remains a famous and beautiful place in Senegal.
