It sits on the Atlantic coast in the western part of Africa. The city is located within the Sahara Desert. This makes it one of the largest cities in that desert region. It acts as the main center for the country's business and government.

The land here is very flat. Some parts of the city are actually below sea level. This makes the area vulnerable to flooding from the ocean. Huge sand dunes also move toward the city from the east every day.

The city works as a busy hub for the whole nation. It has a deepwater port built by China to handle large ships.

The city also has the Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport. This is one of the two main airports in Mauritania. Many people use the city to go to school or work. It is home to the University of Nouakchott Al Aasriya. The city also has a large solar power plant called the Sheikh Zayed plant. This plant uses sunlight to create electricity for the people.

Not long ago, Nouakchott was just a small fishing village. It was once a fortified place known as a ksar. In 1958, construction began to turn the village into a capital city. Moktar Ould Daddah was the first President of Mauritania. He and his advisors chose this specific spot for the capital. They wanted a location that would symbolize national unity. The village was originally home to the Bouhoubainy tribe. This location sat between the city of Saint-Louis in Senegal and Nouadhibou.

The city has changed a lot over many years. In 1958, the city was built for only 15,000 people. However, many people moved there during the 1970s. They left their villages because of drought and the spreading desert. By 1988, the population reached about 393,325 people. In 2013, a census counted 958,399 residents. Today, the population is estimated to be about 1.5 million people.

The city is also split into three larger regions. A large street called Avenue Gamal Abdel Nasser runs through the center. It divides the city into two main parts. One part has residential areas in the north. The other part contains the medina quarter and the kebbe. The kebbe is a place where people built homes very quickly.
