It is a large coral atoll located in the Pacific Ocean. An atoll is a ring of islands that surrounds a central lagoon. Majuro is part of the Ratak Chain, which is also called the Sunrise Chain. The atoll is made of 64 different islands. Most of these islands are very narrow pieces of land. The land area is small, but it encloses a large lagoon. This makes it a very special place in the ocean.

The weather in Majuro stays warm all year long. It has a tropical climate because it is near the Equator. Trade winds blow through the area most of the time. Sometimes, these winds change during the summer months. It does not rain very often, but the rain can be heavy. The hottest month is only 0.4 degrees Celsius warmer than the coldest month. This means the temperature is very steady. Typhoons are quite rare in this part of the world.

People have lived on Majuro for at least 2,000 years. The first settlers were the Austronesian ancestors of the Marshallese people. In the 1870s, there were Protestant missions and trading stations for copra. Copra is dried coconut meat used for oil. Later, the German Empire took control of the atoll in 1885. Japan also ruled the islands for a time. During World War II, the United States military arrived in 1944. They used the lagoon as a very large naval base.
