Tarawa is a beautiful atoll in the central Pacific Ocean.

It sits in the Micronesia region and serves as the capital of Kiribati. The atoll is made of a large lagoon surrounded by a wide reef. A very large ship channel allows vessels to pass into the lagoon. This deep passage is why the name Tarawa means "The Passage." In local mythology, the land of Tarawa was created by a god-spider named Nareau. He separated the land from the sky and the sea.

Life on the atoll depends on the tropical climate and the ocean. The weather is pleasant from April to October with steady winds. From November to March, rain and occasional cyclones arrive from the west. Many plants grow well here, such as coconut, pandanus, and papaya trees. Breadfruit and banana trees also thrive when there is enough rain. However, the islands often face hard times with frequent droughts. The large population also puts a strain on the fish and shellfish found in the sea.

People have lived on these islands for thousands of years. Evidence shows that people settled the Gilbert Islands around 200 BC. The local people are famous for being excellent seafarers. They can cross the vast ocean using traditional navigation and local vessels. In 1788, a captain named Thomas Gilbert was the first European to describe the area. He named the lagoon Charlotte Bay. Later, in 1892, the islands became a British Protectorate. This helped bring peace to the local families after many years of fighting.

North Tarawa has 6,629 inhabitants living on a string of islets. South Tarawa is much larger, with 56,388 people living there. This means half of the entire country lives in the south. South Tarawa is where the government offices and the capital are located. The area includes important places like the State House in Bairiki. Even the airport is located near the island of Bonriki.

History also shows that Tarawa was a site of intense conflict. During World War II, the atoll was occupied by Japanese forces. In November 1943, U.S. Marines landed to fight for the island.

This was a very difficult battle that lasted 76 hours. It was so significant that a documentary film was made about it.

Today, the islands are a peaceful part of the Republic of Kiribati. Many different countries keep embassies here to work with the local government. The atoll remains a vital center for the people of the Pacific.
