These include three reef islands and six coral atolls. An atoll is a ring-shaped island built from coral. These islands sit west of the International Date Line.

Life in Tuvalu is shaped by the surrounding sea. The islands are very low to the water.

Because there is not much soil, growing food is hard. Many people rely on fishing for their meals. They also import food from other places. The economy also uses fishing permits sold to other countries. Some people earn money by working on cargo ships.

Polynesians were the first people to live in Tuvalu. They arrived about three thousand years ago.

These travelers used skilled navigation to cross the ocean. They sailed in outrigger canoes or double-hulled canoes. Scholars think they came from Samoa and Tonga. They used the Tuvaluan islands as stepping stones for more journeys. The name Tuvalu means "eight standing together." This refers to the eight inhabited islands.

European explorers arrived many centuries later. Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña sailed past Nui in 1568.

Later, the islands were known as the Ellice Islands. This name came from an English hydrographer named Alexander George Findlay. Great Britain took control of the islands in the late 1800s. Captain Herbert Gibson declared them a British protectorate in 1892. From 1916 to 1975, they were part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony.

Tuvalu finally became an independent nation in 1978.
