Funafuti is a special place in the ocean. It is an atoll, which is a ring of small islands called islets. These islands sit around a huge body of water known as a lagoon. This lagoon is called Te Namo. It is the largest lagoon in the country of Tuvalu.

Most people in Tuvalu live on this atoll. In 2017, there were 6,320 people living there. This is about 60% of the whole nation's population. The main islet is called Fongafale. It is home to Vaiaku, which is the center for the government.

People have visited Funafuti for a long time. An American sea captain named Arent Schuyler de Peyster first saw it in 1819. He called it Ellice's Island. Later, the United States used the atoll as a base during World War II. American forces arrived in October 1942. They built an airfield on the islet of Fongafale.

This airfield is now the Funafuti International Airport. This history shows how the atoll has changed over many years.

Funafuti is a very important place for science. In the late 1890s, scientists used drills to study the coral. They wanted to test a theory by Charles Darwin. This theory explained how atolls are made.

Because of this important work, it is now a geological heritage site. This means it is a place of great value to the world. Scientists still find the coral structure very interesting today.

Life on the atoll can be hard because the land is very low. Much of Funafuti is less than one meter above the sea. This makes it easy for floods to happen.

Rising sea levels are a big concern for the people living there. Experts think that by 2050, half of the land might be underwater during high tides. By the year 2100, almost all of the land could be flooded. People are working on projects to help protect their homes from the sea.
