Tuvalu is a small island nation located in the Polynesian sub-region of Oceania.

It sits in the Pacific Ocean, roughly midway between Hawaii and Australia. The country consists of nine distinct islands. These include three reef islands and six coral atolls. An atoll is a ring-shaped island formed from coral reefs.

These islands are positioned between 5° and 10° south latitude. They also lie between 176° and 180° longitude. This location places them west of the International Date Line.

The geography of Tuvalu is defined by its low elevation. Because the islands are so low-lying, they are extremely vulnerable to sea level rise. This rising water is a result of climate change. Tuvalu is an active participant in international climate negotiations. It works through the Alliance of Small Island States to address these environmental shifts.

The lack of significant soil also shapes how people live. The country relies heavily on imports and fishing for its food supply. The economy is supported by licensing fishing permits to international companies. Additionally, Tuvalu receives grants, aid projects, and remittances. These remittances come from Tuvaluan seafarers working on cargo ships.

Polynesian migration began about three thousand years ago. These early inhabitants traveled across the Pacific using advanced navigation skills. They used outrigger canoes or double-hulled sailing canoes for these long journeys.

Scholars believe Polynesians spread from Samoa and Tonga into the Tuvaluan atolls. These islands served as stepping stones for further migration into Melanesia and Micronesia. The name Tuvalu means "eight standing together" in the local language. This name refers to the eight islands that were originally inhabited. Some traditions suggest the islands were created by the Eel and the Flounder. In these myths, the flounder created the flat atolls. The eel is seen as the model for the important coconut palms.

European contact began in the 16th century. Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña was the first European known to sail through the area. He sighted the island of Nui in 1568. He named it Isla de Jesús because of the religious calendar.

Other explorers later charted the islands under different names. Captain John Byron called them the Lagoon Islands in 1764. In 1819, the island of Funafuti was named Ellice's Island. This name honored an English politician named Edward Ellice. Later, the English hydrographer Alexander George Findlay applied the name Ellice Islands to the entire group.

British influence grew during the late 19th century. In 1892, Captain Herbert Gibson declared the Ellice Islands a British protectorate. The islands were managed as part of the British Western Pacific Territories. From 1916 to 1975, they were part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony. A referendum in 1974 allowed the islands to decide their own future. The colony ceased to exist on 1 October 1975. By January 1976, the administration separated into two colonies: Kiribati and Tuvalu. Tuvalu finally achieved full independence as a sovereign state on 1 October 1978.

Religion and trade also played significant roles in Tuvaluan history. Christianity arrived in 1861 when a deacon named Elekana landed at Nukulaelae. He had drifted for eight weeks in a canoe after a storm.

By 1878, Protestantism was well established on every island. In the mid-19th century, trading companies became active in the islands. They employed traders who lived on the atolls to manage business. However, the trade structure changed in the 1890s. Companies moved away from resident traders to a system using ship managers. This system allowed ships to deal directly with islanders during visits.
