Tonga is an archipelago located in Oceania within the South Pacific Ocean.

Officially known as the Kingdom of Tonga, it consists of 171 islands. Only 45 of these islands are inhabited by people. The islands are organized into three primary groups: Vava'u, Ha'apai, and Tongatapu. The country stretches across a long north-south line. The largest island is Tongatapu, which contains the capital city of Nuku'alofa.

Geologically, the islands have two distinct types of foundations. Most islands feature a limestone base created from uplifted coral formations. Other islands consist of limestone that sits on top of a volcanic base.

The climate in Tonga is classified as a tropical rainforest climate. This means the islands experience high humidity, averaging about 80% daily. There is a distinct warm period from December to April. During this time, temperatures rise above 27°C. A cooler period follows from May to November, when temperatures rarely exceed 26°C. The wettest month is typically March, with average rainfall reaching 13.6 inches.

Tropical cyclones can affect the islands, usually during the season from November to April. Because of these natural hazards, Tonga ranks third globally in disaster risk according to the 2021 WorldRiskReport.

Tonga's history began with the arrival of the Lapita culture. These Austronesian-speaking settlers arrived between 1500 and 1000 BC.

Thorium dating confirms that the town of Nukuleka was inhabited by 888 BC. Over time, these settlers developed a unique Tongan ethnic identity and language. By the 12th century, the Tu'i Tonga established a powerful maritime empire. This thalassocracy, or sea-based empire, controlled vast areas of the Pacific. Its influence reached the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Fiji, Samoa, and Niue. It even extended into parts of modern-day French Polynesia.

European contact began in 1616 with the Dutch vessel Eendracht. Captain Willem Schouten led this first recorded visit. Later, Abel Tasman visited Tongatapu and Ha'apai in 1643.

In 1773, Captain James Cook arrived during an annual festival. He was so warmly received that he named the islands the "Friendly Islands." However, historical accounts from William Mariner suggest political leaders actually debated killing Cook during the visit. They ultimately failed to agree on a plan of action. Following these early explorers, whaling vessels became regular visitors to the islands. The ship Ann and Hope was recorded in 1799, and the Albatross was the last whaling visitor in 1899.

A major turning point occurred in 1845 when Tāufaʻāhau united Tonga into a single kingdom.

He was a warrior and strategist who later became a king. In 1875, he declared Tonga a constitutional monarchy. This reform established a code of law, land tenure, and freedom of the press. From 1900 to 1970, Tonga was a British protected state under a Treaty of Friendship. During this time, the United Kingdom managed Tonga's foreign affairs. Crucially, Tonga never gave up its sovereignty to any foreign power. It remains the only Pacific nation to have retained its monarchical government through this period.

Tonga is currently a semi-constitutional monarchy. This transition began in 2010 following legislative reforms and representative elections.

The country is a member of several international organizations. These include the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the Pacific Islands Forum. It is also part of the Alliance of Small Island States. The Tongan monarchy features an uninterrupted succession of hereditary rulers from one family. This tradition is deeply respected, and criticizing the monarch is considered contrary to local culture.

The nation also provides free and mandatory education for all its citizens.

The ecology of Tonga is rich and includes the Tongan tropical moist forests. The islands host 73 species of birds, including the endemic Tongan whistler and Tongan megapode.

In Tongan tradition, flying fox bats are considered sacred. They are the property of the monarchy and are protected from hunting. This protection has allowed the bat population to thrive. However, the islands face significant geological challenges. In January 2022, the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcano erupted.

This caused an unprecedented atmospheric explosion and a tsunami. The event cut off communications and required five weeks to repair the submarine fiber optic cables used for the internet.
