Most islands have a base made of coral. Some islands have volcanic rock under their limestone. You might see many flying fox bats in the trees. In Tongan legend, these bats are sacred. They belong to the monarchy, so they are protected. There are also 73 species of birds in the islands. One of these is the Wattled honeyeater.

Tonga has a very old and powerful history. People from the Lapita culture arrived about 2,500 years ago. They built a strong culture and identity. Later, they formed the Tu'i Tonga Empire. This empire controlled many parts of the Pacific. They reached as far as the Solomon Islands and Samoa.

They were famous for their influence over the region. Even after Europeans arrived in 1616, Tongan culture stayed strong. A Dutch ship named the Eendracht was one of the first European vessels to visit. Later, explorers like Abel Tasman and James Cook arrived. Cook called the islands the "Friendly Islands." He arrived during a festival for the monarch.

Many important things happened to shape the Tonga we know today. In 1845, a warrior named Tāufaʻāhau united the islands into a kingdom. He later became a king and helped create a constitution in 1875. From 1900 to 1970, Tonga was a British protected state. However, Tonga never gave up its own power to rule itself.
