It sits within a part of the ocean known as Polynesia. You can find it northeast of New Zealand and northeast of Tonga. It is also nestled in a triangle between Samoa and the Cook Islands. Because it is one of the largest coral islands in the world, people call it "The Rock." This nickname comes from its traditional name, the "Rock of Polynesia."

The land on Niue has two very different levels. First, there is a coastal terrace that is about 25 to 27 metres high. This area slopes down to meet the sea at small cliffs.

The second level is much higher and sits in the center of the island. This is a large plateau made of limestone that rises above sea level. A coral reef wraps around the whole island like a ring. The only big opening in this reef is near the capital city, Alofi.

People have lived on Niue for a very long time. Evidence suggests Polynesians from Samoa settled there a long time ago. Later, people from Tonga arrived during the 16th century. In 1774, Captain James Cook was the first European to see the island. He originally called it "Savage Island" because of a misunderstanding. He thought the people had blood on their teeth. They were actually just eating red fe'i bananas.

Most Niueans are also citizens of New Zealand. In fact, between 90% and 95% of Niuean people live in New Zealand. The island is a bilingual place where people speak English and Niuean. About 46% of the people speak only Niuean. The country is divided into 14 different villages. Each village has its own council to help lead the community.

Today, Niue is working hard to protect its natural beauty. The island wants to become the world's first fully organic nation.
