Only Vatican City and Monaco are smaller than Nauru. This makes it the smallest republic and the smallest island state. It is also the smallest member of the Commonwealth of Nations by area and population. The population is approximately 10,800 people.

The physical geography of Nauru is defined by its unique structure. A fringing coral reef surrounds the entire island.

This reef is exposed during low tide and contains many pinnacles. Because of this reef, there is no seaport on the island. Small boats must use specific channels in the reef to reach the land. A fertile coastal strip sits between the beach and the interior.

The center of the island is a plateau. This plateau is surrounded by coral cliffs. The highest point on the island is Command Ridge.

The island's environment has been deeply changed by human activity. Nauru is a phosphate-rock island. Phosphate is a mineral used widely in many industries. For over a century, people used strip mining to extract these rich deposits.

This process has devastated about 80 percent of the land area. The central plateau is now a barren terrain of jagged limestone pinnacles.

These pinnacles can reach up to 60 meters in height. This environmental damage is sometimes called the "resource curse." The phosphate reserves were mostly exhausted by the 1990s. Remaining reserves are not economically viable to extract.

Nauru has a long and complex history of settlement and colonization. Micronesians first settled the island at least 3,000 years ago.

Following World War I, the island became a League of Nations mandate. It was administered by Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

World War II brought significant conflict to the island. Japanese troops occupied Nauru on August 25, 1942.

During the occupation, 1,200 Nauruans were deported to the Chuuk Islands. Only 745 Nauruans survived the captivity. They were finally returned to Nauru in January 1946. After the war, the United Nations established a trusteeship. Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom acted as joint administrators. This arrangement continued until Nauru gained independence on January 31, 1968.

Economic shifts have shaped Nauru's modern era. After independence, Nauru controlled its own phosphate mines.

This made Nauruans some of the richest people in the world for a time. However, the wealth diminished as the phosphate ran out. A trust was created to manage the mining wealth for the future. Unfortunately, the value of this trust has diminished. To generate income, Nauru briefly acted as a tax haven. It also became a center for illegal money laundering. Recently, the country has accepted aid from Australia. This aid is linked to hosting the Nauru Regional Processing Centre.

Nauru's climate and natural resources remain vital to its identity. The climate is hot and very humid throughout the year. This is due to its location near the equator. Monsoon rains typically occur between November and February. The island has no permanent rivers.

Most plant life grows in the narrow coastal belt. Coconut palms flourish in these fertile areas. The land around Buada Lagoon supports bananas, pineapples, and vegetables.

Despite the mining damage, the island remains a unique part of the Micronesian region. It continues to navigate the challenges of its geography and history.
