It sits within a region known as Micronesia. The country is made of 32 atolls and other islands. It also includes one raised coral island called Banaba.

These islands are spread very far across the ocean. They stretch from Banaba in the west to Kiritimati in the east. This long line of islands crosses both the equator and the 180th meridian.

Because of its position, the eastern islands are in the most advanced time zone on Earth.

Life in Kiribati is closely tied to the sea and the land. Many people live on the capital, Tarawa.

Tarawa is made of several small islets. These islets are joined together by causeways. These are raised paths that allow people to travel over the water.

The economy relies on many different things. People catch fish and practice subsistence agriculture. They also export copra, which is dried coconut meat. The government also earns money from fishing license fees. These fees come from foreign fishing fleets that visit the waters.

History tells us that people have lived here for a very long time. Austronesian peoples likely arrived between 3000 BC and 1300 AD.

Early groups of seafaring people moved between the islands. This helped mix different cultures together. In the 15th century, different ways of ruling began to appear. Some northern islands had chiefs, while southern islands used councils of elders.

Later, European ships visited the islands. In 1892, the British made the islands a protectorate. This arrangement lasted until 1979. That was the year Kiribati became a sovereign, independent state.

There are many important facts about the size and people of Kiribati. As of the 2020 census, the population was just over 119,000 people.

More than half of these people live on Tarawa. The name Kiribati is a local version of the name "Gilberts." This was named after a British captain named Thomas Gilbert.

The country is a member of many groups, like the United Nations. It joined the United Nations in 1999.

Kiribati faces serious environmental concerns today. Because the islands are low-lying atolls, they are very vulnerable to the ocean.

Sea-level rise from climate change is a major worry for the nation. Changes in the weather and rising seas can make life difficult. The islands also have to deal with the threat of tsunamis.

Because of this, Kiribati works with other nations to talk about climate change. They want to protect their homes and their way of life for the future.
