The Line Islands are a huge chain of islands in the central Pacific Ocean.

This chain stretches from the northwest to the southeast. It is one of the longest island chains in the whole world. Most of these islands belong to the country of Kiribati. However, three parts belong to the United States. These are Jarvis Island, Kingman Reef, and Palmyra Atoll. All of these islands were formed by volcanic activity long ago.

Many of these islands are atolls. An atoll is a ring of coral that often has a lagoon inside. Most of the Line Islands have these lagoons, but Vostok and Jarvis do not. Some islands are very large. Kiritimati is a special atoll because it has the largest land area of any atoll on Earth. Only three islands have people living there all the time. These are Kiritimati, Tabuaeran, and Teraina. People on these islands sell things like seaweed, copra, and pet fish.

History shows that people have lived here for a very long time. Archaeologists found old village sites and coral platforms on many islands. These sites include Teraina, Malden, and Flint Island. These remains date back as far as the 14th century. In the 1700s, explorers like Captain Cook visited the islands. Later, in the 1800s, whaling ships visited the islands often. They came to the islands to find wood, water, and food. One ship named the Coquette visited Kiritimati in 1822.

Ownership of the islands changed many times over the years. In 1888, the United Kingdom wanted to use Tabuaeran for a Pacific cable. This cable helped send messages across the ocean. The cable worked from 1902 until 1963. The United States also claimed some islands using a law from 1856. Finally, in 1979, the United States signed the Treaty of Tarawa. This treaty recognized that Kiribati has control over most of the Line Islands.

The islands are also famous for how they track time. The International Date Line passes right through this island chain. In 1994, Kiribati changed its time zones to make things easier. This move placed the islands in the world's farthest forward time zone. Because of this, they are among the first places to see the sun rise. Millennium Island was even part of a huge global celebration in the year 2000.
