Chatham Island

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Chatham Island is a very special place in the south Pacific Ocean. It is the largest island in the Chatham Islands group. You can find it near the eastern coast of New Zealand's South Island. The Moriori people were the very first settlers to live here. They called the island Rekohu, which means "misty skies." The Māori people have another name for it, Wharekauri. It is a large land that sits far away from other big pieces of land.

The island has a shape that looks like the letter T. It is shaped by two big bays and a large lagoon. Petre Bay is a deep part of the west coast. The main town, Waitangi, sits in a small spot on Petre Bay. On the east side, Hanson Bay stretches across the whole island. Between these two bays lies the huge Te Whanga Lagoon. This lagoon covers about 180 square kilometers. It drains into the sea through the southern part of Hanson Bay. Several small rivers flow from the hills into this lagoon.

People first found the island using a ship called HMS Chatham. This European ship located the island in 1791. The island was named after that very same ship. The land has many different heights and shapes. Most of the north and central parts are quite flat. These areas are only a few meters high in some spots. However, the south part of the island is much higher. About half of the south side is over 150 meters above the sea. The highest point is 299 meters tall near the southern end.

The weather on Chatham Island is cool, wet, and windy. It has an oceanic climate with frequent rain. The temperature does not change very much throughout the year. In the summer, the high temperatures are usually between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius. In July, the high temperatures are between 11 and 13 degrees Celsius. It is very rare to see snow fall here. The first snow near sea level was recorded in July 2015. This was the first time snow fell there in many decades.

Many interesting living things call this island home. The island has the only known breeding group of the magenta petrel. This seabird is called the tāiko. It is a critically endangered bird, which means it is in great danger. People actually thought this bird was extinct for a long time. They found it again in 1978. In 2017, there were fewer than 200 of these birds left. This island even appears in a famous book called Cloud Atlas.
