They sit far to the east of New Zealand's South Island. The largest islands in this group are Chatham Island and Pitt Island.

Some parts of the islands are now nature reserves. These areas help protect special plants and animals found nowhere else. The islands even include the easternmost point of New Zealand, called the Forty-Fours.

The first people to live here were the Moriori. They are descendants of Polynesians who settled New Zealand.

Because the islands were colder than tropical areas, the Moriori could not grow many plants. Instead, they lived as hunters and fishers. They even built a special boat called a waka kōrari. This craft was made of flax and used kelp air bladders to stay afloat.

They used these boats to visit outer islands for birding missions.

History in the islands changed a lot in the 1800s. In 1835, Māori people arrived from the North Island of New Zealand.

This led to a very difficult time for the Moriori. After much violence, the Moriori were kept as slaves. This lasted until 1863 when a local official released them. Later, in 1865, a Māori leader named Te Kooti was sent to the islands as a prisoner. He and his group lived in huts and worked on sheep farms.

European explorers also visited the islands. A ship captain named William R. Broughton reached the islands in 1791.

He named the main island after John Pitt, the Earl of Chatham. Later, people came to hunt seals and whales in the ocean. There was even a plan in 1841 to sell the islands to Germany. The price was set at £10,000, but the sale did not happen. Instead, the islands officially became part of New Zealand in 1842.

Today, the islands are a quiet and special place to visit.

The main town and port is called Waitangi. Most people there work in fishing, farming, or tourism. The islands even have their own time zone. It is 45 minutes ahead of the time in mainland New Zealand. Visitors might see unique things like the Chatham pigeon.
