It is the second largest island in the Chatham Islands. These islands sit far east of the main islands of New Zealand. Pitt Island sits southeast of Chatham Island. A stretch of water called Pitt Strait separates the two islands. The land on the island is very hilly. Its highest point is called Waihere Head.

Kahuitara Point is a famous spot on the island. It is the first populated place on Earth to see the sunrise of a new year. This is because of the local time zone.

The island has a long and interesting history. The Moriori people were the first to live there. They called the island Rangiaotea or Rangihaute. You can still find many old items from their time almost everywhere. These items are called artefacts. In 1835, Taranaki Maori arrived and called it Rangiauria. This name is still used today. Europeans first saw the nearby Chatham Island in 1791. Captain Charles Johnston saw Pitt Island in May 1807. He named it after William Pitt, the 1st Earl of Chatham. Later, the name was just shortened to Pitt Island.

Life on the island can be quite different from a big city. Most people make money through farming, fishing, or tourism.

Farmers send live sheep and cattle to mainland New Zealand. The island must import fuel and most manufactured goods. A supply ship visits the island about every three months. People do not get power from a big grid. Instead, each home makes its own electricity. They use wind turbines or diesel generators. Most homes even have satellite TV and internet.

Getting around the island takes a bit of planning. There is a gravel road from Flower Pot Bay to the airstrip. The airstrip is made of grass for light planes. Air Chathams flies a Cessna 206 between the islands.

Most people use quad bikes or four wheel drives to travel. Sometimes, people even use horses to get around. The island has a small school and a church. In 2011, the school had only eight children. They were all between 6 and 12 years old.

Nature is a big part of life on Pitt Island. There are flocks of feral Saxon Merino sheep on the land. The New Zealand Department of Conservation works to protect the area. They work with landowners to manage special reserves. Many ships have been lost near these islands over the years. One ship called the Glory was wrecked in 1827. This wreck happened in a place now called Glory Bay. The island remains a unique and quiet place in the Pacific Ocean.
